Rhode Island has received $28 million in federal money for high-speed rail after Florida's governor canceled a rail project there.

Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse said on Monday that Rhode Island is getting money for two of the three projects it applied for. It's one of 15 states sharing in $2 billion Florida lost ap reports.

The award includes $25 million to add a third track at the station in South Kingstown, as well as $3 million to review possible improvements at Providence station. The state did not get $3 million it requested for the station at T.F. Green Airport.

Reed says the projects will create jobs while improving train service to Rhode Island and enhancing high-speed service along the Northeast corridor.

Whitehouse calls it an important investment in the state's future.

this is a windfall for many states and a big backwards step for florida. Its governor Rick Scott unspeakably turned down funds for a high tech high speed railway so florida remains dated with its transportation while other states move into the 21st century with florida's money.

Rick Scott seems to be lacking common sense in Florida, he refused to wait for studies that showed the high speed rail would not cost the state a penny and he cancelled the funding because he is stubborn and immature. This has really hurt his popularity because it was a high speed rail system that would have been cash flow positive and it would have moved florida forward into the sophisticated transportation systems that tourists expect - especially if they are from Europe. The rail service would have connected tampa to orlando to miami all within a couple of hours. Big mistake Rick Scott and the people of Rhode Island and other states who are spending florida's grant money thank you.
